VMware expecting push toward desktop virtualisation
At the recent Goldman Sachs technology conference held in San Francisco, Raghu Raghuram VMware senior VP for virtualization and cloud platforms arm asserted that the company’s customers have so far virtualised 25% of their existing servers. Raghuram went on to say that he believed that the current 25% figure could easily increase to as much as 90% if current trends continue.
The executive said that in fact most of new customer growth at VMware is in fact concentrated in the SMB sector, with many SMB’s still yet to have virtualised their systems.
In the current enterprise market, VMware are seeing growth driven by higher penetration rates for server virtualisation, as well as increased purchases of VMware software applications, including business continuity and site recovery manager.
The Vmware executive went on to say that there are four drivers for the growth of the company at present : core virtualization platform, which he says is being refreshed every 24-36 months; management tools; desktop virtualization; and applications and applications platforms, including Zimbra, which the company is acquiring from Yahoo.
When asked about the future potential for desktop virtualisation, Raghuram said that in late 2009 and continuing into 2010, they have been seeing a significant increase in pilot tests. H e went on to say that the VMware sales force is spending at least half of their time working on desktop implementations. He went on to say that every time he discusses solutions with a customer, desktop virtualisation dominates the conversation.
According to Raghuram most customers are looking to tie the adoption of server virtualisation, in with the modernisation and virtualisation of their desktops. This particularly included those looking to migrate toward windows 7 and modernising their application rollout to match their new OS.
