Resellers face a year of change as cloud computing takes hold
Cloud computing is fast become one of the most talked about technology trends of 2010. As companies begin to realise that moving applications into the cloud saves space, time, money they will change their purchasing habits.
Solution providers are looking to the cloud to develop new revenue streams by offering cloud based services rather than the traditional pushing tin method. For resellers it is simply is a case of adapt quickly, or get left behind the pack. Cloud computing it seems is creating a niche for an entirely new kind of value added reseller (VAR).
Many industry experts and analysts are predicting that 2010 will see the erosion of traditional legacy systems as cloud based solutions take hold. The push toward cloud based solutions is due largely to the elasticity and scalability offered by cloud systems and reduction of operation costs offered. This coupled with the industry wide reduction of IT budgets, means that cloud services are ready to make the leap from emerging technology to business necessity.
In order for VAR’s to make the most of this change in direction they will need to incorporate a degree of professional services tied into virtualisation, improved managed service offerings and devote attention to constantly seeking new application integration.
This new breed of VAR will have to be able to help guide their customers IT direction and provide not only new applications and technology, but provide them with the resource and training to utilise them.
One thing that is for certain is that traditional hardware focused VAR‘s are going to have to look to make some changes in the next year. Cloud computing is clearly making the step from a fringe technology to an economic necessity and the focus of reselling will have to move quickly to adapt.
